COROS Apex 4 Review: The Best Mid-Range GPS Watch for Backcountry Navigation?

Our Verdict

The COROS Apex 4 is built specifically for endurance athletes, trail runners, and mountaineers who need detailed offline mapping and long battery life. Balancing a rugged titanium bezel with scratch-resistant sapphire glass, this watch is designed to survive harsh backcountry conditions.

With standout features like a 63-hour real-world GPS tracking capability, an accurate electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor, a built-in speaker, and a microphone, the Apex 4 aggressively challenges premium competitors. While it sacrifices modern smartwatch conveniences—such as an AMOLED display, contactless payments, and a third-party app store—it stands out as one of the most reliable and durable multi-sport watches on the market for pure athletic performance.

Highlights

  • Detailed Offline Maps: Pre-loaded global landscape and topographic maps with full trail and street names.
  • Premium, Rugged Build: Lightweight Grade 5 titanium bezel paired with highly durable sapphire glass.
  • Multi-Day GPS Battery Life: Tested to last 63 hours continuously with active tracking enabled.
  • Advanced Health Tracking: Built-in ECG sensor for precision heart rhythm monitoring.
  • Upgraded Hardware: Built-in speaker and microphone to handle voice alerts and phone calls.

Detailed Performance Analysis and Test Results

1. . Backcountry Navigation and Activity Use

Whether navigating in a whiteout on a pre-planned route or re-orienting yourself mid-route, the Apex 4 delivers smooth on-wrist mapping. The addition of fully detailed maps with clear mountain, street and trail names is a huge plus. A dedicated mapping button on the left side of the watch frame instantly brings up the map screen during an workout or ski tour.

2. GNSS and Heart Rate Accuracy

The COROS Apex 4 marks a significant step forward from its predecessor, the Apex Pro 2. Running the watch in All Systems dual-frequency GNSS mode, we tested its tracking accuracy on a known 5km course. The Apex 4 measured within +/- 0.03km.

Heart rate accuracy with the watch and the armband was impressive.

3. Smartwatch Features

The integrated speaker and microphone allow you to answer phone calls on the wrist and listen to real-time pace alerts. While smartphone notification handling is functional, text response options are limited.

The redesigned COROS App 4.0 serves as an intuitive companion app, making it incredibly simple to customize data layouts, sync directly to Strava or Apple Health, and analyze ongoing training loads. Biometric health monitoring tracks heart rate, HRV (Heart Rate Variability), sleep stages, stress levels, and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). However, it lacks the deep, predictive daily summaries found in Garmin's Body Battery or Morning Report ecosystems.

4. Wearability and Physical Design

Available in both 42mm and 46mm case sizes, the Apex 4 features a 1.2-inch MIP screen, weighing in at a comfortable 2.3 ounces. With a 50mm body diameter and 14mm thickness, it strikes a great balance between structural durability and everyday comfort on the wrist. It ships with quick-release nylon or silicone strap options, and the sleek titanium design transitions seamlessly from technical mountain scrambles to casual daily wear.

5. Battery Life

Stated Battery Life All Systems GPS Tracking 65 Hours Daily Smartwatch Use Up to 14 Days14 Days

Because the low-power MIP screen draws minimal energy compared to AMOLED displays, the Apex 4 easily covers multi-day ski touring trips or bike packing adventures without a charger. A full charge from 0% to 100% takes about 101 minutes using a standard USB-C cable adapter plugged directly into the back of the watch.
