Skin Track Management & Technical Ascent Course
Master the art of efficient backcountry route-setting. This intensive two-day field program is designed for advanced skiers and splitboarders looking to master the technical skills required to establish safe, energy-efficient skin tracks in complex winter terrain.
Core Learning Objectives & Technical SkillsUnder the direct mentorship of certified ACMG guides, participants will dive deep into advanced ascent tactics, including:
- Terrain Utilization & Efficiency: How to read micro-topography to maximize trail flow while minimizing exposure to avalanche hazards.
- Pacing & Grade Control: Learn the mechanics of setting a consistent, sustainable climbing angle that preserves your group's energy.
- Technical Ascent Maneuvers: Hands-on practice with advanced kick turns, managing steep slopes, and contouring around complex mountain features.
- Hard Snow & Steep Terrain Tactics: Pro-tips for maintaining skin traction on icy tracks, transitioning to structured bootpacks, and executing low-visibility whiteout navigation.


Our Small-Group Guiding GuaranteeTo deliver elite, high-consequence safety mentorship, this course runs at a strict 4:1 student-to-guide ratio. This ultra-low ratio ensures personalized, real-time feedback on your trail-breaking technique and group management decisions.
Course Prerequisites
This is an advanced backcountry program. Before enrolling, all participants must meet the following safety and physical criteria:
- Avalanche Education: Completion of an AST 2 (Avalanche Skills Training 2) course or equivalent experiential mountain training.
- Riding Ability: Confident, strong ski or splitboard movement skills in uncontrolled, expert backcountry settings.
- Terrain Comfort: Relative comfort navigating and managing risk across complex, unmanaged alpine terrain.
- Physical Fitness: High stamina and the physical ability to break trail through deep, heavy snowpack.

Instruction Style
100% practical, real-world application. You will spend both days out in the winter snowpack, actively taking turns leading the group and receiving live feedback from certified ACMG guides.

Physical fitness
Sustained climbing and skiing at elevation demands aerobic capacity and leg strength.
Mountain experience
Prior backcountry skiing or mountaineering experience is strongly recommended before enrollment.
