Intro to Multi-Pitch Rock Climbing

Intro to Multi-Pitch Climbing Course Overview
Leave the single-pitch crag behind and look up. This intensive 1-day field program is designed for competent outdoor single-pitch lead climbers who are ready to ascend routes that rise hundreds of feet off the valley floor. Under the direct mentorship of certified rock guides, you will master the fundamental rope systems, belay station management, and efficiency strategies required to safely tackle multi-pitch vertical environments.

Core Technical Skills You Will LearnOur single-day curriculum focuses on high-retention technical systems designed to keep you safe and moving fast on big walls:
- Belay Station Management: Learn how to build clean, organized anchors and systematically manage your ropes to avoid dangerous tangles on small, vertical ledges.
- Belaying a Second from Above: Master the mechanics of using assisted-braking or guide-mode belay devices to safely bring up your partner from a hanging or standing stance.
- Multi-Pitch Transition Efficiency: Practice smooth transitions between leading and following roles to minimize wasted time at changeovers.
- Multi-Pitch Rappelling Protocols: Learn specialized descent tactics, including extended rappels, saddlebagging ropes, friction hitches (third hands), and partner changeover safety.
Our Small-Group Guiding GuaranteeMulti-pitch terrain demands direct, constant communication and flawless system oversight. To ensure total safety and highly personalized coaching, this course operates at a strict 2:1 or 4:1 student-to-guide ratio. This low grouping guarantees your guide is always within arm's reach as you manage your vertical rope stations.
Course Prerequisites
Before expanding your vertical horizons, participants must meet the following baseline requirements:

- Foundational Ropework: Complete mastery of fundamental climbing knots (figure-8, clove hitch, alpine butterfly) and standard belay techniques.
- Gear Familiarity: Basic understanding of personal climbing equipment, including helmets, harnesses, and locking carabiners. Prior outdoor climbing experience is mandatory.
