1. Advanced Companion Rescue & Complex Scenarios

Prepare to dive deep into professional-level rescue strategies. You will practice hands-on:

  • Alternative transceiver search techniques (micro-search strips and three-circle methods).
  • Managing complex, real-world scenarios including multiple burials and deep burials.
  • Advanced shoveling and probing ergonomics to maximize efficiency during a crisis.
2. Live Terrain Management & Route Selection

In this course, you take the reins in big terrain. You will make critical, real-time decisions about route selection and tour planning. Gain confidence in:

  • Assessing real-time snowpack conditions and localized hazards.
  • Strategizing complex navigation routes using digital and traditional tools.
  • Advanced skin track management and efficient trail-breaking techniques.
3. Collaborative Leadership & Trip Planning

  • Daily Briefings: Participate in structured morning and afternoon meetings.
  • Co-operative Planning: Every student contributes to the daily tour planning process, ensuring objectives align with current weather and avalanche forecasts.

Course Format

  • Duration: 4 Full Field Days of immersive, hands-on outdoor instruction.
  • Daily Progression: You will travel to a different backcountry location each day to experience a variety of terrain types and snowpack conditions.
  • Develop an Advanced Backcountry Process

  • Daily Schedule Structure: * Morning Meetings: Collaborative trip-planning sessions where every student contributes to reviewing avalanche forecasts, weather models, and setting the day's objectives.
    • Real-Time Field Instruction: Active mentorship while breaking trail, managing the skin track, and assessing hazards live in big terrain.
    • Afternoon Meetings: Debriefing sessions to review decisions made during the day and evaluate group dynamics.
  • Group Dynamics: Operates with a low 6:1 student-to-guide ratio (capped strictly at 4–6 students per group) to ensure a highly personalized, small-group mentorship environment.
  • Flexible Learning Option: Can also be adapted and run as a shortened 2-day custom course upon request.

    Physical fitness

    Sustained climbing and skiing at elevation demands aerobic capacity and leg strength.

    Mountain experience

    Prior backcountry skiing or mountaineering experience is strongly recommended before enrollment.
